Children in Nottingham are falling behind the expected level of development according to a report in This is Nottingham. The Department for Education released its yearly figures that showed the national average that five year olds reach the desired level of learning across all levels stands at 64%. In Nottingham only 58% reach the level that they are expected to be at, meaning two in five children are failing to hit their targets.
Children were given tests during Summer 2011 in areas including communication, language and literacy, understanding and worldly knowledge, physical development, and emotional and social development. The main focus for the children’s services from the Nottingham City Council is to continue to work on improving speaking and listening. The work will be closely aimed at more vulnerable groups such as boys in the hope to increase their engagement in learning.
